The Springfield Museum of Art in Ohio has its origins in a grassroots effort by a small cohort of citizens who aimed to create a visual arts center in their community. What began as a series of exhibitions in borrowed spaces blossomed into an established bricks-and-mortar museum in 1967, with capital expansions in 1973 and 1994. In 2012, the museum earned the distinction of being the first and only art museum in Ohio to be named a Smithsonian Affiliate.
After decades of frequent use, the beloved museum required significant repairs to its roof, plumbing, HVAC system, and more. To address these needs, the Springfield Museum retained Benefactor Group to conduct a feasibility study for a campaign focused on capital improvements and endowment funds. Over several months, our consultants conducted 28 interviews and facilitated two group discussions. Benefactor Group found strong support for the museum and its vision, committed volunteer leaders, and ample opportunities to nurture and build donor relationships.
Ultimately, Benefactor Group recommended a $5 million campaign and provided guidance from preparation and launch through to a successful campaign conclusion.
