National 4-H Council

For more than 100 years, 4-H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, empowering them to express who they are and how they can improve their lives and communities. Delivered through Cooperative Extension—a community of over 100 public universities nationwide—4-H offers experiential learning opportunities where young people learn by doing.

In 2019, Benefactor Group was engaged by the National 4-H Council to evaluate the feasibility of a campaign aimed at raising at least $46 million while sustaining the organization’s ongoing contributed revenue, resulting in a comprehensive campaign goal of $150 million. The study process identified several potential lead gifts and yielded one mid-seven-figure pledge immediately. Although the campaign faced delays due to the pandemic, Benefactor Group continued to provide strategic counsel as 4-H leaders determined next steps.

In December 2021, Benefactor Group collaborated with the National 4-H Council to navigate the announcement of a landmark $50 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Benefactor Group conducted in-depth research regarding the donor, the gift, and other gifts of similar magnitudes, advising the President and CEO and Board of Trustees on the timing and messaging of the gift announcement. The team also assisted with scenario planning for various circumstances surrounding the announcement.

Benefactor Group worked with the National 4-H Council leadership team, Board of Trustees, and 4-H Extension regional leaders to devise a plan for allocating the $50 million gift. This strategy incorporated feedback from many stakeholders and addressed both the urgent needs of America’s youth and the long-term sustainability of the organization.
