Susan Brekelmans, CFRE

A senior consultant, Susan works in partnership with clients to elevate their fundraising efforts and advance their missions. She leads development assessments for clients across the nonprofit sector: identifying organizations’ strengths, pinpointing opportunities for improvement, and mapping strategies to build relationships with donors and inspire philanthropic investment. Susan also contributes to campaign feasibility studies and provides campaign counsel and fundraising counsel. From small shops to big institutions, Susan seeks the best path forward for her clients.

Susan has served the common good for most of her working life. An early stint in public media led her to a role managing fundraising events for adult literacy organizations. She spent a decade at a major acute-care hospital in Western Canada, where she gained experience in all aspects of fundraising. There, she led a team focused on building strategic partnerships with physicians to maximize philanthropy. Her experience shaping inspiring opportunities for donor investment and developing cases for support brought her to Benefactor Group in 2019, where she first joined the team as a skilled writer and communications advisor.

Susan has an undergraduate degree from McGill University and a master’s in business administration in nonprofit management from York University. She attended the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy’s Madison Institute and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). She has been a presenter at Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and Association of Fundraising Professionals events. A perennial volunteer, Susan currently serves on the board of the Ohio Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.

It’s an empowering and motivating starting point for any objective. With an abundance mindset, you assume you will reach your goal and start identifying the steps needed to get there—instead of being held back by the belief that you will never have the things you want.
