NIRSA Foundation

With a network of more than 900 colleges and universities across the country, the NIRSA Foundation supports the collegiate recreation community through scholarships, research assistance, and professional development. In 2014, the NIRSA Foundation approached Benefactor Group for support in exploring new fundraising opportunities, particularly those appealing to health- and wellness-based organizations.

Working collaboratively with NIRSA’s leadership, Benefactor Group consultants conducted a comprehensive analysis of the foundation’s fundraising goals and strategies. This involved creating a preliminary case for support that articulated the foundation’s mission and impact. To gain deeper insights, consultants convened a study Task Force, engaged in interviews with 20 donors and stakeholders, and evaluated NIRSA’s existing infrastructure and fundraising approach. The findings from this extensive process culminated in a three-year development plan designed to ensure NIRSA’s continued success and adaptability in the evolving philanthropic landscape.

In 2016, Benefactor Group expanded its partnership with NIRSA by developing a detailed campaign plan, an updated case for support, and a peer-to-peer fundraising strategy. Consultants aimed to bolster NIRSA’s infrastructure by assessing its online donation capabilities and evaluating its data management systems. This included four quarterly site visits and 20 semi-monthly conference calls, ensuring that Benefactor Group remained closely engaged with NIRSA throughout the process. By providing ongoing campaign coaching and leadership training, Benefactor Group worked diligently to empower NIRSA to achieve its fundraising goals and enhance its capacity to serve the collegiate recreation community.
