The National Museum of the U.S. Navy tells timeless American stories of duty, diplomacy, sacrifice, and the men and women devoted to these ideals. However, the museum’s facilities are inadequate for honoring these values. Since 2001, attendance has declined, and the buildings require significant renovation. Even when restored, they are not suitable for museum use.
In 2020, the Naval History and Heritage Command, which oversees the U.S. Navy’s historical programs and museums, engaged Benefactor Group to launch a bold fundraising effort to secure a new home for the museum. Benefactor Group conducted a pre-campaign assessment to examine the market potential and recommend effective strategies for a $450 million public-private partnership aimed at establishing the new National Museum of the U.S. Navy (NMUSN). The findings were delivered in early 2021.
Since August 2021, Benefactor Group has continued to advise the Naval History and Heritage Command and its newly established 501(c)(3) fundraising partner, the Navy Museum Development Foundation, as they prepare for an ambitious fundraising initiative.
In addition to fundraising counsel, Benefactor Group initiated capacity-building training in 2022 and strategic planning services in 2023 for five museums within the Naval Museums Division and their associated foundations.
