The Horry County Museum collects and preserves materials—some as old as 5,000 years—related to the county’s prehistory, natural history, history, and culture. Housed for nearly 30 years in Conway’s original post office, the Museum had only enough room to display 10% of its holdings! Benefactor Group was invited to prepare leaders and volunteers for an $8.3 million project to relocate the Museum. Counsel wrote the case for support, tailored a campaign, and positioned the institution for a $5 million grant from the County and a $500,000 leadership gift from a local business. Counsel also worked with Museum leaders to win substantial competitive funding from the State of South Carolina. The Museum’s new location in historic Burroughs School will offer 28,000 square feet of exhibition space and a dramatic new tourist destination in Horry County.
