Goodwill Columbus

In 2018, Goodwill Columbus engaged Benefactor Group to explore strategies for increasing its fundraising efforts to $2 million annually within three years. While Goodwills nationally typically do not embrace traditional fundraising, Goodwill Columbus recognized the potential for philanthropy to elevate its modest development program.

Benefactor Group conducted a comprehensive assessment to identify the organization’s strengths and opportunities, culminating in a strategic action plan for future success. Fifteen leaders, volunteers, and donors were engaged in conversations to assess Goodwill’s readiness to enhance or introduce new development ventures.

An internal review of fundraising systems, giving plans, prospect research, portfolio and solicitation management, staff structure, and metrics was conducted to gauge the organization’s fundraising capacity. Additionally, a workshop was held with development staff to discuss the assessment findings. Together with Benefactor Group consultants, the team outlined a course of action.

Benefactor Group developed a plan to build fundraising capacity, which included strategic objectives, initiatives, staff enhancements, and a timeline for achieving financial targets. Based on these recommendations, and with the support of Benefactor Group’s search services, Goodwill Columbus successfully hired its first major gifts officer to lead its enhanced fundraising efforts.
