Consistently ranked among the top four libraries in the United States, Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) serves as a cornerstone of the community. With more than 44% of Franklin County residents holding library cards and at least 8.5 million annual users, CML surpasses major urban library systems in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles in engagement.
Faced with diminishing government support for operations, CML sought to explore the potential for increased philanthropic investment. Benefactor Group conducted a comprehensive internal and external assessment, engaging current and prospective donors, board members, community leaders, and staff. Our work also included a thorough review of library records and materials, as well as competitive benchmarking, which resulted in a detailed development plan.
In 2011, Benefactor Group was invited to conduct a feasibility study to test a $35 million fundraising goal. Based on the study’s findings, we recommended that CML proceed immediately with a capital campaign. Following this recommendation, Benefactor Group provided strategic consulting services to support major gifts and broad-based giving strategies, helping to position the library for long-term philanthropic success.
