Colorado State Fair

For over 100 years, the Colorado State Fair has been a source of wholesome fun for families and significant cultural and economic benefits for the state. Located in Pueblo, Colorado, the Fair generates over $43 million annually in economic impact for the surrounding area while providing an affordable and accessible amenity for a diverse population. Recognizing the need to modernize aging facilities while honoring the Fair’s unique history, the Colorado State Fair Authority initiated a Master Plan in 2022 to optimize the Fair and Fairgrounds for the future.

Feasibility Study

In 2023, the Fair Authority engaged Benefactor Group to conduct a feasibility study, focusing on the construction of a new multi-use, year-round Pavilion, which is the top priority of the $177 million Master Plan. With a budget of $40 million, this Pavilion is seen as essential for community benefit. The feasibility study evaluated both private philanthropy and public funding, including an internal assessment of the organization’s readiness and external discovery through interviews, focus groups, and benchmarking with other state fairs.

Campaign Launch

Benefactor Group’s study revealed a viable pathway for campaign success, offering a set of recommendations and a plan to raise the necessary funds. Following this, Benefactor Group was retained in 2024 to provide ongoing counsel for the capital campaign. This included crafting a detailed campaign plan and a comprehensive case for support, as well as supporting new staff hires for the effort. The campaign theme, “Growing the Tradition,” was developed to inspire volunteer leaders.

Although the campaign has just begun, several lead gifts totaling approximately $5 million have already been secured. Benefactor Group facilitated the identification and strategy for donor prospects, particularly for lead donors, and implemented a portfolio management process. Training sessions for the campaign committee included fundraising training, a fundraising toolkit, and role-playing exercises for donor meetings.

With a dynamic plan and comprehensive toolset in place, the Colorado State Fair is off to an impressive start in their fundraising efforts. Benefactor Group remains engaged to support both the Phase 1 campaign and future phases of the Master Plan.
